Happy Birthday Me 2013

So today, at 11:01am, I officially got a year older! Happy Birthday to me!

It hasn’t been the most fantastic day, with spending all morning at the doctor’s surgery waiting for an appointment as my back got worse last Friday and I have a lovely headache to go along with it now. Also, I’m hot. My husband promised me a birthday cake but he’s delayed that to NEXT weekend because he couldn’t drag himself away from playing the new SimCity all weekend. Typical! And I didn’t (or haven’t yet) got my special birthday dinner he also promised. He says because I didn’t end up going to some training at work on Saturday (good excuse, couldn’t walk?) but you know it’s for the exact same reason as above – SimCity!

This cake I made as St Patrick’s Day is coming up in less than a week but it’s now doubling as my birthday cake. I’ve made a Chocolate Guinness cake in the past and loved it but couldn’t find that recipe so I found a new one.

It’s actually the first Nigella Lawson recipe I’ve ever made. How is that even possible? If you would like to try out the recipe just go here.

I didn’t make the cream cheese icing from her recipe because I’ve had some leftover lemon cream cheese buttercream sitting in the freezer since Jason’s birthday last November. I just tinted it green and piped it on using my largest petal tip in round circles heading towards the centre. Shoddy job. Good news is the lemon flavour goes pretty well with this deliciously moist cake. You should really try this cake if you prefer a chocolate cake that’s deep and mellow rather than really rich and sweet because that’s what the Guinness does to it. Or just try it anyway.

Tonight should be better though, for birthday dinner we are having Herb Rubbed Lamb Steaks with Pea and Feta Salad (from my Delicious Simply the Best cookbook). I have to cook most of it since Mister is working late but he has agreed to bbq the steaks! Then we are going to pop open a bottle of Brown Brothers Prosecco, eat some cheese and play some of my birthday present together – Lego Lord of the Rings. (I’m also getting a clay extruder for using with sugarpaste but he hasn’t gotten around to buying it for me yet.)

Oh! I almost forgot. www.bakeboss.com.au must have known it was my birthday because they sent me an email that their Mad Hatter cake tins are half price until Friday. I just couldn’t resist and have bought six of them. I never see these on sale anywhere! Should be fun to try them out.

Until next time, have fun!
