Chocolate cake test

I was trying out a chocolate cake recipe for an upcoming baby shower and having another go at the swiss meringue buttercream that I thought was just slightly not perfect last (first) attempt.

So here’s the top of the cake. I was flicking through some catalogues at home and tore out something in a jewellery catalogue while exclaiming “oooo I like this!”, much to the horror of the hubby. I rolled my eyes and explained it wasn’t something I wanted to buy but I liked the pattern and it was going on my cake. He breathed a sigh of relief in one way while groaning in another, since he tells me everything is about cake these days.

I did much better at smoothing the buttercream this time with the help of a lazy susan from our cupboard which has never been used and a new bench scraper. Worked well but glass and metal scraper equals horrible squealy noise.

I challenged (punished) myself by doing cornelli lace in buttercream on the sides. I don’t think I have hot hands but I still melted it somewhat and it took forever to do.

And here is the inside. Check out that torting! Proud moment incoming! Maybe the camera angle makes it look off, but they were seriously perfectly straight layers.

 I will post up a bunch of pictures tomorrow showing some of my process through making cookies and cake for the baby shower order and the final products.

    Looks awesome! I’ve always avoided doing cornelli lace on cakes because it definitely feels like a punishment – yours looks great and I’m jealous. 😛

    Thanks Britt! I swear cornelli lace is piping equivalent to a marathon run.
